Edition set incorrectly for Ignition 8 after upgrading firmware to version 4.0.0
Applies To:
Firmware for the following groov EPICs:
- GRV-EPIC-PR1 (only if using Ignition version of firmware)
- GRV-EPIC-PR2
Firmware for the following
groov RIO: GRV-R7-MM2001
Symptoms:
This KB article is an informational KB article. It describes an issue with Ignition version 8 that requires an additional step to fix your gateway backup file (.gwbk).
After installing the Ignition version of firmware version 4.0.0, your edition may change from edge (Ignition Edge) to standard (Ignition). The gateway may also behave unpredictably. This is due to an issue with how Ignition manages gateway backup files.
Workaround:
For either of the following workarounds, you must first download the groov Fix Gateway Backup utility to a Windows 10 or 11 computer:
- Download groov Fix Gateway Backup utility from opto22.com. The utility is delivered as a zip file.
- Create a folder on your computer and extract the utility from the zip file to that folder:
- In Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder where you downloaded the utility.
- Right-click on the zip file name and select Extract All.
- In the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders window, specify the name of the folder you created.
- Click Extract.
Workaround #1—You have
not yet installed firmware version 4.0.0:
- Create a backup of your Ignition Gateway as described in Gateway Backup and Restore.
- Fix the Ignition Gateway backup file:
- Copy the gateway backup file into the folder that you created when you unzipped the groov Fix Gateway Backup utility. Remember the file name because you will need it in the steps that follow.
- Open a Command Prompt window (in the Windows Search bar, type Command Prompt, then click Command Prompt).
- Navigate to the folder containing the utility and backup file (the command is cd <path_to_folder>).
- Enter the following command: .\fixgwbk <original_file_name>.gwbk <new_file_name>.gwbk, where original_file_name is the file name from step a. The new name can be any name that conforms to Ignition Gateway requirements; for example, you can append the text _fixed to the original file name.
- Upgrade your groov EPIC or groov RIO to the Ignition 8 version of firmware. For instructions, refer to the appropriate form:
- Restore your gateway as described in Gateway Restore using the fixed version of the gateway backup file.
Workaround #2—You
already installed firmware version 4.0.0:
- Create a backup of your Ignition Gateway as described in Gateway Backup and Restore.
- Fix the Ignition Gateway backup file:
- Copy the gateway backup file into the folder that you created when you unzipped the groov Fix Gateway Backup utility. Remember the file name because you will need it in the steps that follow.
- Open a Command Prompt window (in the Windows Search bar, type Command Prompt, then click Command Prompt.
- On your groov EPIC or RIO, log in to Ignition:
- From the groov Manage Home page, click Ignition.
- Click Open Ignition. You will see the Ignition (standard) interface, with the blue and orange colors.
- Restore your gateway as described in Gateway Restore using the fixed version of the gateway backup file.
- In groov Manage, switch from Ignition (standard edition) to Ignition Edge:
- From the groov Manage Home page, click Ignition. In the Status section, the Ignition field displays Running, while the Ignition Edge field displays Disabled.
- In the Config section, disable Ignition by clicking the Enable Ignition toggle, then click Save. Wait for the Ignition field to display Disabled.
- Click Ignition in the Platform field and select Ignition Edge.
- Click Save. Wait for the Ignition Edge field to display Running.
- Click Open Ignition Edge. You should now see the Ignition Edge logo and colors (blue and green).
Resolution:
Follow the instructions in the Workaround.
