Installing firmware version 4.0.0 (or higher) with Ignition 8 fails at Decompression step

Applies To:

Firmware for GRV-EPIC-PR1

Versions Affected:

4.0.0 or higher

Symptoms:

NOTE: This KB article is for informational purposes. This issue is due to a storage space limitation.

If you try to install version 4.0.0 (or higher) with Ignition 8 (for example, grv-epic-pr1-ignition8-4.0.0-b.106.field.bin) on a GRV-EPIC-PR1 that already has any version of Ignition, the installation will stop at the "Decompressing update" step and report that it cannot continue.

If you review the groov Manage logs, you may see messages like the following:

[2025-05-07T10:35:47.445] [ERROR] SystemUpdate - Failed to extract update. Error: Command failed: /bin/tar -xf /var/tmp/system-update/system-update.img -C /system-update
/bin/tar: rootfs.relfs.xz: Wrote only 9216 of 10240 bytes
/bin/tar: u-boot-cob-sda5.img: Cannot write: No space left on device
/bin/tar: u-boot-cob-sda6.img: Cannot write: No space left on device

Resolution:

Only install the Ignition version of EPIC firmware if your application requires Ignition. Otherwise, install the Ignition-free version of firmware (the file name will not include the word "ignition").

If you must install firmware with Ignition, do it in the following order:

  1. Install a version of firmware that does not have Ignition.
  2. Install the version of firmware that has Ignition.
