PAC Display Runtime windows may not update data

Applies To:

  • PACPROJECTBAS (PAC Project Basic)
  • PACPROJECTPRO (PAC Project Professional)

Versions Affected:

R10.0 to current

Symptoms:

NOTE: This KB article is for informational purposes. This issue is not a defect in PAC Display.

If you use Windows 10 and are running Windows Defender, you may observe the following behavior:

  • When PAC Display Runtime starts, values may not update with data (Runtime shows # signs instead of values).
  • If values had been updating, they may stop updating.

If you minimize and maximize PAC Display Runtime, the windows will update.

Workaround:

To resolve this issue, you will need to do one or both of the following:

  • Disable or modify real-time scanning in Windows Defender
  • Adjust settings in the Windows Security app
The instructions for how to do this depend on the version of Windows running on your computer. Microsoft  has released several versions of Windows 10 since its initial release in July, 2015. (You can read an overview of the revision history in this article.) Microsoft sometimes changes the names, locations, and defaults of security settings. The instructions below reflect the names, locations, and defaults in Windows 10 version 2004.

Disable or modify Windows Defender real-time scanning

If you cannot disable real-time scanning, create an exception in Windows Defender for the folder where the log files are or will be located:

  1. From the Windows Taskbar, click Start and find the Windows Security app. If you can't find the Windows Security app, click on the Search tool in the Windows Taskbar and type "Security", then select the Windows Security app.
  2. In Security at a glance, click Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Virus & threat protection settings, click Manage settings.
  4. Under Exclusions, click Add or remove exclusions.
  5. Click Add an exclusion and Select File.
  6. Navigate to the PAC Project programs folder. (The default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Opto22\PAC Project 10.3.)
  7. Select DisplayR.pro.exe or DisplayR.basic.exe.
  8. Click Open. If Windows prompts you to verify that you want to allow this change, click Yes.
  9. Click Add an exclusion and Select Folder.
  10. Navigate to your PAC Display project folder.
  11. Click Select Folder.
  12. Close Window Security by clicking on the X on the upper-right corner of the Windows Security window.

Adjust settings in Windows Security App

  1. From the Windows Taskbar, click Start and find the Windows Security app. If you can't find the Windows Security app, click on the Search tool in the Windows Taskbar and type "Security", then select the Windows Security app
  2. In Security at a glance, click on App & browser control. (If you see a "Turn on" button underneath App & browser control, you can ignore it.)
  3. Scroll down to Exploit protection and click Exploit protection settings.
  4. Click Program settings (to the right of System settings).
  5. Click on the plus sign (+) next to Add Program to Customize, then select Add by program name.
  6. Type DisplayR.pro.exe (if you are using PAC Display Professional) or DisplayR.basic.exe (if you are using PAC Display Basic) in the field. Click Add.
  7. In the Program settings: DisplayR.pro.exe window, do the following for every setting in that window (there are about 20 settings):
    1. Click the Override system settings check box.
    2. Click on the slider to turn off the setting.
  8. Click Apply. If Windows prompts you to verify that you want to allow this change, click Yes.
  9. Close Windows Security by clicking on the X on the upper-right corner of the Windows Security window.

Resolution:
