Secondary or Wifi IP address can conflict with Primary IP address

Applies To:

PACMANAGER (PAC Manager)

Versions Affected:

All versions prior to R10.2c

Resolved In Version:

R10.2c

Symptoms:

One of the Ethernet network interfaces on a SNAP PAC controller may appear to be unresponsive. But if you remove the Ethernet cable from the other interface, the original interface becomes responsive.

The network interfaces (Ethernet 1 and 2 and WiFi, depending on model) on PAC controllers must be on distinct subnets. If they are not, messages may be sent out the wrong interface. When you configure the network interfaces in PAC Manager, it verifies the addresses, but the check may not catch all cases of conflicts. Note: A subnet is a logical partition of an IP network into multiple, smaller network segments. An IP address is divided into two fields: a Network Prefix (also called the Network ID) and a Host ID. The subnet mask separates the Network Prefix and the Host ID.

Workaround:

See the Simplified IP Addressing tech note for details on how to ensure IP addresses are on different subnets.
