At Opto 22 we continue to support older products as long as we can. In the case of the B1 and B2 brain boards, though, the end of life is here.

Because we can no longer obtain essential parts, we cannot continue to manufacture the B1 and B2.

Now for the good news!

Opto 22 designed drop-in replacements for both the B1 and B2 several years ago. These E1 and E2 replacement brain boards have already been field tested and work great.

Replacing a B1 with an E1

For digital I/O, brain board replacement is simple.

  1. Turn off power to the rack.
  2. Remove serial communication wiring from the B1 and remove the brain board from the rack.
  3. Install the E1 on the rack and replace serial communication wiring exactly as you had it on the B1.
  4. Install jumpers on the E1 exactly as they were on the B1.
  5. Turn on power to the rack.

Most existing Optomux programs will run as before without requiring any changes.

Replacing a B2 with an E2

For analog I/O, brain board replacement is even easier than for digital.

  1. Turn off power to the rack.
  2. Remove the B2 brain board from the rack.
  3. Install the E2 on the rack.
  4. Install jumpers on the E2 exactly as they were on the B2.
  5. Turn on power to the rack.

Most existing Optomux programs will run as before without requiring any changes.

 

PLEASE NOTE: If your program requires very fast boot-up times from the brain board, you may see changes. For more information, read OptoKnowledgeBase article KB83808.

 

INTRODUCING E1 AND E2

 

E1 and E2 Brain BoardsMeet the solution: E1 and E2 brain boards.

These boards are drop-in replacements for B1s and B2s (see steps on the left). But they also add new capabilities you may find useful.

Both the E1 and E2 are serial and Ethernet ready and support additional protocols besides Optomux. So you can:

  • Keep all your existing I/O racks, modules, and field wiring intact.
  • Continue to run your existing Optomux program over serial, just as you do now.
  • Run the same Optomux program over an Ethernet network with no or few modifications.
  • Upgrade existing Optomux systems to connect to a newer SNAP PAC System over Ethernet using the OptoMMP protocol.
  • Communicate with Modbus systems over Ethernet using the Modbus/TCP protocol.
  • Communicate with other automation systems using OPC over Ethernet.
