Production Specification

The GRV-R7-I1VAPM-3 is a groov RIO energy monitoring unit (EMU) designed as an intelligent, distributed power and energy monitoring module. With built-in web-based configuration, commissioning, flow logic software, and even the ability to run simple control programs written in IEC 61131-3 compliant languages, the groov RIO EMU also offers support for multiple OT and IT protocols. All these capabilities give the groov RIO EMU the flexibility to fit into IIoT projects (especially those that require energy data acquisition or communications) or traditional energy management control systems, or to act as a stand-alone energy management control unit.. The groov RIO EMU simultaneously measures volts AC RMS and amps AC RMS on Category III wye (up to 400 VAC) or delta (up to 600 VAC) circuits. It can monitor three-phase AC current using 0.333 V, 1 V, or 5 A current transformers (CT). (Opto 22 offers a range of split-core current transformers suitable for the groov RIO EMU.) Each phase can be configured to ignore signals below a specified threshold in power measurement and energy accumulation to help you tune signal accuracy.

From the two measured field inputs, the module automatically calculates a total of 64 data values, including voltage and current; true, reactive and apparent power; power factor, frequency, net energy, and other values, as well as accumulated energy values for all phases. 

You can use groov RIO EMUs in several ways:

  • As an edge energy monitoring unit, communicating data between loads and data destinations. You can:
    • Push data directly to on-premises or cloud apps, databases, or other software, typically using the included Node-RED software
    • Publish data to an MQTT broker
    • Respond to Modbus/TCP requests for data
    • Configure with browser-based groov Manage software
    • Manage local user accounts and permissions, or from a central location through an LDAP server
  • As a traditional energy monitoring unit (on its own or as part of a larger system), configuring channels through your control program:

The GRV-R7-I1VAPM-3 has a communications processor with two switched Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, one capable of Power over Ethernet (802.3af PoE Class 0) connections, supplying power to the groov RIO. It also has:

  • Supply terminals to connect to a 10-32 V DC power supply
  • A USB host port, which can be used to connect additional devices like a Wi-Fi adapter, a USB memory stick, or a USB-to-serial adapter (none included)
  • Status LEDs to display the status of power, network, and electrical activity.
  • One 13-pin removable field I/O termination connector with spring clamp wire retention

PC-Based I/O Overview

groov Find

groov Find is an optional utility program you can use on a Microsoft Windows computer to locate groov RIO units, groov EPIC processors, and groov Boxes on your network. Using groov Find, you can see these products' IP addresses and access them through a web browser.

NOTE: If you are using a Mac, groov Find is available for free in the App Store.

If you can't access your groov RIO, groov EPIC, or groov Box with a web browser, your network may not provide DHCP and DNS services. groov Find can help you locate your groov product, connect to it, and assign it a fixed IP address if necessary.

A valid security certificate may be required by mail servers to allow you to send emails from your Opto 22 products, for example, through: 
  • a PAC Control strategy running on a groov EPIC or SNAP PAC controller
  • a groov View HMI sending event notifications
  • a Node-RED flow on groov RIO or groov EPIC
Valid security certificates may also be required by other services you may be using via software on your Opto 22 device (for example, using Node-RED to move data in and out of Google Sheets).

All providers of email or other services update their security certificates from time to time. When that happens, your email or other service will stop working until you either install a new certificate or update firmware that contains the new certificate. Make sure you set up error handling procedures or other ways to verify that services are working. 

Opto 22 updates certificates as soon as we know about new ones. If you see a security error (for example, -2104 in PAC Control) or have some other indication of a certificate issue, be sure to check for new firmware or download this zip file. If you need help, contact Opto 22 Product Support.
