Updating firmware on R-series controllers with microSD card slots may fail if the newer firmware file is too large to install on the controller using the normal update process (Tools > Maintenance > Install Firmware).
Note that this issue does not affect:
- Wireless controllers.
- Controllers that do not have microSD card slots.
If the firmware update fails, PAC Manager may display a "Firmware update completed, but restart could not be confirmed" message, and in Tools > Inspect, you may notice that bridge firmware S9.2c is installed on the controller.
This issue can also occur when the controller is programmed with a private key as a part of Secure Strategy Distribution (using PAC Terminal SSD).
To determine if your controller is configured for SSD, use PAC Manager's Inspect mode (Tools > Inspect).
Select "Other," and then set:
- The Address field to F408004
- The Type to 32-Bit Integer
- The Length to 1
Then click Refresh.
If the value is 2, then the controller is configured for SSD. For instructions to update the firmware in your controller, see the PAC Terminal SSD documentation.
The best workaround is to upgrade to PAC Manager R9.5b or higher.
If that's not possible, follow these steps to work around the issue:
- If a secondary IP address is configured, write down the current parameters (you'll need them in Step 5), and then use PAC Manager's Status Write page (Tools > Inspect, Status Write button, ETHERNET 2 Interface area) to set the configuration back to 0.0.0.0 in all fields. Be sure to click the Apply button.
- On the Status Write page, select "Reset to defaults and Restart Device" and then click the Send Command button.
- Make sure PAC Manager R9.5a or higher is installed, and then use it to install firmware R9.5a.
- Install the desired firmware version (R9.5b or higher).
- Use the Status Write page to configure the ETHERNET 2 interface again.
